The book commemorating the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s death celebrates William Rubin (1927-2006) and his significant influence on modern art. As the Director of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) from 1967–1988, Rubin was known for his critical acquisitions and exhibitions that shaped MoMA’s collection and the art historical narrative. This publication, unlike previous ones, focuses on Rubin’s personal collection, offering insights into his life, writings, and the art he collected. Contributions from artists like Frank Stella and Richard Serra, art historians, and Rubin’s wife, Phyllis Hattis Rubin, enhance our understanding of Rubin’s vision. Accompanying an international traveling exhibition, the 400-page book features images that explore the dialogue between tribal and modern art, highlighted by the Cubist movement and its influence from tribal sculpture.
